Pink: It’s not just a color! {And A Giveaway!}

by Megan on October 22, 2011

Nancy G. Brinker made a promise to her dying sister, Susan. She would do everything she could, to end breast cancer. Susy was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33 in 1977, and died three years later. Brinker felt that if there was an awareness of the cancer and it’s treatment, maybe people like her sister would have a better chance of survival.
To fulfill her promise, Brinker founded the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in her sister’s memory in 1982. It is is now the world’s largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer and  the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer with more than $1.9 billion invested to date.

Egglands Eggs

For the second year in a row , Eggland’s Best has given their eggs a pink makeover. Starting in mid-September and going through mid-November, they have switched out their distinctive red “EB” stamp into a pink “EB” alongside the  signature Susan G. Komen for the Cure Running Ribbon. They are also pledging a donation of $50,000 to the Susan G. Komen foundation.

I was tickled pink when I was asked to partner with with Eggglands Best to help raise awareness, and host my own EB “Pink” brunch. They also offered to host a giveaway to one lucky reader, so keep reading!

Pink Brunch for Breast canser Awareness

I hosted my brunch as a kick off to the Nor-Cal Think Pink community effort to promote breast cancer awareness.

Did you know that 1 out of every 8 women will be diaganosed with Breast cancer?

Early detection is the best defense – when caught and treated early, breast cancer has a 98% cure rate.

I invited some of friends over, including a breast cancer survivor. I had a buffet style brunch with everything being individual serving size portions. The menu included

Assorted Cheeses

Fruit cups

Yogurt Parfaits

Bacon Candy

Quiche

Scones

Praline French Toast

Pumpkin Mousse

Pink Ribbon Sugar Cookies

Breast cancer awareness brunch

I decorated everything all pretty in pink.  I have to thank Heather from the blog  Chickabug for the free printables I used. She has a whole collection of printables for breast cancer awareness. I just used a fraction of what she has available, but I loved the water bottle labels and the minuture Hershey bar wraps. Check them all out!

We had some educational, yet fun games to play also. We played truth or crap, learning what was truth, and what was myth. We listed as many famous people who have been diagnosed with breast cancer that we could think of, and we played a light hearted  game of who ever got caught crossing their legs, lost their pin. The person with the most pins at the end, wins.

What a lovely brunch!

My very good friend from high school and college was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of years ago. After surgery, chemo, and radiation, she is doing well.

I am fortunate enough to not have had breast cancer touch my family personally, although I know many people/friends/acquaintances in our small town who have or have had breast cancer.

I’m so happy to hear that Egglands Best is helping with this cause :)

My grandfather was diagnosed with breast cancer about ten years ago. It was a secondary cancer but non the less, it was breast cancer. A lot of people are shocked to hear that a man was diagnosed but it’s not uncommon…just not talked about as much I think.

How has breast cancer touched my life? My aunt had it a few years ago. A first cousin died from it just after I was born. But in probably the biggest way, I’m a cancer nurse. I coordinate cancer clinical trials, and in 19 years, there have been numerous special women and men who’ve had breast cancer. Many have won their battle, some have not, but they’ve all been special in their own way. So many stories, never enough time or space to tell them.

God bless us every one.

I’ve had an aunt who has had it twice now and is currently in remission. I also currently have another friend who just found out her fight with it is not over. She is scheduled to have two surgeries coming up and I’m crossing my fingers for her with both of them. In addition, I have one friend fighting another form of cancer. This is her second bought with cancer. Finally, my father died in 2006 of colon cancer that spread to more than his colon. So cancer, not only breast cancer has touched and affected my life greatly.
