April is Grilled Cheese month and Jarlsberg is having fun by creating a Grilled Cheese event on Kitchen Play. I was excited to be picked to participate in the April 2011 Side Car Series Event and was challenged to create a grilled cheese sandwich recipe using Jarlsberg cheese.
I love cheese and knew immediately what I wanted my grilled cheese sandwich to consist of. Nothing goes better with cheese than wine jelly. So I created a grilled cheese and jelly sandwich with caramelized onions and bacon.
You get the whole sweet, salty, smokey thing going on all in one grilled cheese sandwich.
It’s Incredible!
I used Jarlsberg cheese, a mild semi-soft cheese made from cow’s milk. It has a rich, buttery texture with a mild, nutty flavor. It’s a very versatile cheese, making it an ideal choice for cheese platters, salads, and an excellent ingredient in hot dishes, like a grilled cheese sandwich.
I paired it up with my Homemade Vanilla Pear Jam but you can use your favorite jam or jelly. Then just by adding caramelized onions and bacon, you take it over the top.
Toast-a-bags allow you to make grilled cheese sandwiches in your toaster. No butter needed! I love Jarlsberg but haven’t eaten any for ages – I’ll have to get some! The toasted sandwich looks wonderful.

Love jelly and cheese in a flour tortilla but never thought about putting it in a grilled cheese but why not? Sounds fabulous!
I tried this with mango butter. It was delicious! Thanks.
Hi Megan,
What an inspired combination! The mellow nuttiness of Jarlsberg pairs so beautifully with the salty bacon and sweet Vanilla Pear Jam. Caramelized onions put it right over the top. “Sandwich” doesn’t even begin to describe this gustatory work of art. Nicely done!
Best,
Casey
